Hello,
Croeso to the Siarter Iaith section of our website. We have a Criw Cymraeg who are responsible for helping us achieve 100 Welsh related targets that make up the Siarter Iath. Here you will find information and various pictures, videos and activities relating to celebration days targets we are working towards and Welsh visitors that support us in our Welsh language journey.
Spring 2025
Urdd
This term, we entered a number of pupils into the regional round of the Eisteddfod which is called the Cylch. We would like to congratulate all of our pupils who competed. One of our pupils took part in the Instrumental competition (piano) at the Eisteddfod Cylch and came in third place. We also had two groups of reciters compete at the Eisteddfod Cylch. We were also very successful at the Ysgol Bae Baglan cluster Eisteddfod, winning many of the competitions including the photography, art 2D, individual instrumental competition and also the school choir’s rendition of Calon Lan.
Criw Cymraeg
Our Criw Cymraeg have been delivering our weekly Welsh assembly with Mrs Selley and Miss Noon. Pupils play ‘pos yr wythnos,’ introduce a sentence pattern, sing Welsh songs, hand out certificates, sing the National Anthem and say a prayer in Welsh as part of the assembly.
Criw Cymraeg have also planned and carried out a whole day of carousel activities for the whole school for Dydd Santes Dwynwen. Crew members led each activity which included outdoor learning, creative, literacy and ICT tasks for both Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 pupils.
Criw Cymraeg set homework over spring half term for Dydd Gwyl Dewi. Foundation Phase pupils drew a warrior woman in their life on JIT and wrote a sentence about them. Key Stage 2 pupils drew/ created a 3D image of a famous Welsh warrior woman and wrote about them. Criw Cymraeg judged all homework entries and presented awards and certificates in assembly.
Clwb Cymraeg Bach
In Clwb the pupils created St Dwynwen cards, learning about commands to take part in the hall movement circuit e.g. rhedwch, trowch, using the Tric a Chlic app on iPads and singing Ffa La La Karaoke. The Clwb Cymraeg Bach are now starting to share a Karaoke QR code every two weeks on the newsletter to create a Welsh learning link with families at home.
Cwis Dim Clem
Four Year 6 pupils took part in the Cwis Dim Clem competition, the quiz was based on all things Welsh. Da iawn to the 4 pupils who represented Baglan Primary School and made it through to the final in Neath College and were the overall winners. Llongyfarchiadau ar enedigaeth dy fab
Autumn 2024
Urdd
We have 25 members of Urdd Gobaith Cymru.
On the 15.10.2024 and 16.10.2024, Year 4 pupil went on the Urdd sleepover residential. During this time the children visited many different facilities. They visited Big Pit, where we had a guided tour or the underground mine. They visited St Fagan’s, where the pupils were able to visit the different houses from the past and understand what possessions they had. They visited Cardiff Castle where they had a walk around the facilities. Finally, they visited the Principality Stadium where they had a guided tour of the ground, facilities and the changing rooms. The children thoroughly enjoyed this overnight sleepover. It was very good for the children to develop their independence skills such as, emptying their bags, sleeping without their trusted grown-ups and collecting their belongings the following day. Thank you to Miss Noon, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Thorne and Mrs Jones for giving up their time to take the pupils.
Pob Urdd & Cog Urdd
This term our Urdd pupils entered the Pob Urdd/ CogUrdd.
For the first competition the pupils were asked to make ‘cup cakes’ at home. The competition was strong, and our school cook was our adjudicator. Our winner then attended the regional competition which were held in Swansea.
For the second competition, the pupils were asked to prepare a ‘wrap.’ Once again, the competition was strong. The pupils had to make everything from scratch and bring in their own utensils including an apron. Our winner then attended the regional competition which was held in Swansea and needed to make a burger.
All pupils who entered showed great enthusiasm and creativity in their cooking recipe.
On 13.09.2024, Year 6 went to Margam park, along with 1700 children from the local area. The children sang a welcome song called ‘Dur a Mor’ for the 2025 Eisteddfod and the children were filmed throughout the day doing various activities such as making a large triangle shape using everyone who attended which looked like the Urdd symbol. A lovely day out for the Year 6 children and a great opportunity for them to take part in the film. The finished video was played on S4C in November.
Criw Cymraeg
The Criw Cymraeg meet on a fortnightly basis. This term they have planned and prepared activities for the school Shwmae Day.
The Criw Cymraeg prepare and practise for their Welsh assembly on a fortnightly basis. The children all have speaking roles and responsibilities and have been able to show this to the rest of the Key Stage 2 pupils. Welsh assemblies include singing the National anthem, presenting the Welsh speaker of the week, focusing on a Welsh phrase/ pattern of the week and ask different Welsh questions.
Clwb Cymraeg Bach
A new group of Year 2 children have formed Clwb Cymraeg Bach. They work on a new Welsh oracy task each week and they have covered, greetings/gyfarchion, feelings/teimiadau, numbers/rhifau and body parts/Y corff so far. They play tric a chilc on the iPad and take part in word wall games to learn vocabulary. Every week they take home a vocabulary worksheet to share their learning at home.
