We are proud to be a Rights Respecting School!
As a Rights Respecting School, we put the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of our ethos and curriculum. We aim to improve well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. The UNCRC is made up of 42 articles which outline the civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights of children. These are the rights that every child should have, regardless of where they are in the world.
UNIVERSAL: Rights are for ALL children
INHERENT: Rights are there at BIRTH
INALIENABLE: Rights CANNOT be taken away
UNCONDITIONAL: Rights DO NOT have to be earnt
INDIVISIBLE: All rights are EQUALLY important

Rights Respecting School – Steering Group
To begin the school term, the Rights Respecting Group asked all classes to focus on Article 28: The right to learn and go to school. This is such an important right for the start of the academic year. All classes worked together to create their class charter.
A class charter is a set of rules, promises or guidelines that children and teachers have all agreed. They are created to help children understand that they have certain rights in the classroom. These rights are important, as they help to keep them safe and happy while they receive their education.
In October the right of the month was Article 19 – The right not to be harmed and to be looked after and be kept safe. Children discussed the importance of being safe and making informed decisions in relation to Halloween on Bonfire Night. We also reinforced who the children can speak to if they feel unsafe.
During November, our right of the month was Article 1: Everyone under the age of 18 has these rights. We decided to focus on this month as Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on the 20th of November. World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s Global Day of Action for children, by children, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As a school, we all sang the song “We stand together”. This is a beautiful song, released by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, that celebrates children’s rights.
